Recently, I started sharing more in depth, behind the scenes footage of our day-to-day process through Instagram stories. It has been really fun and rewarding to hear from all of you about how much you are enjoying them! Since Instagram stories only have a short life, on today’s blog post we're taking a deeper dive into my design process for creating prints for our bandanas!

Step 1: Inspiration

If you have been around for a while, you know how much I value your input. I try to invite you all into the creative process as much as I can through the many polls we share to Instagram. Your ideas for new themes, products, color palettes and more inspire our products.When I am stumped on something and need a little extra guidance, I reach out to my customers first! This usually sparks an idea and gets me going into the inspiration phase.

I love color and like to start any design with a color palette. This gives me a feeling of what the design should look like and what personality I want it to have.

I pull colors from everywhere! For example, I saw the colors in a pile of unfolded sweaters on my dresser and my water cup. I loved how these colors were working together and I used this to inspire the Midnight Garden fabric.

Step 2: Drawing the Design

I work in Adobe Illustrator on my laptop and with my Apple pencil on my Ipad. I was trained in Illustrator and actually don’t really know Photoshop at all! Over the years of using Adobe Iillustrator, the program has changed so much and I try to keep up with the new features and updates. For example….live paint. If you aren’t familiar with this feature, it’s a game changer!

If I am creating something geometric and uniform, I will work on my laptop and draw with points using the pen tool or shapes to create the object. If something is more organic, like flowers, fruits, vegetables. I will start with my ipad and use the apple pencil to draw up the shapes.

The below image shows the Midnight Floral design that was created using my Apple pencil on my Ipad.

Step 3: Creating the Repeat

Creating the repeat is its own work of art! It has taken me many years to get this step nailed down. I create the repeat of the pattern on my laptop in Illustrator. I move around the elements to make sure the repeat flows and doesn’t look like I copied and pasted the pattern over and over.

The blue box below shows the repeat area.

Step 4: Finalizing color and design

Next up, I usually print out the new design on my office printer to make sure it looks okay. If nothing immediately jumps out at me, I will print a test on the fabric printer. I usually mess around with the scale a lot. I think the scale of the pattern is a very important aspect of the fabric for bandanas. If the design is too big, each bandana might not have all of the elements. If it is too small, the detail will disappear.

Color swatches and test prints are reviewed

Step 5: Review the collection together

I love designing collections. I think creating prints that all work together is so satisfying! I try to think about the collection from the opinion of my customers.

Is there a print a boy dog would wear? I personally love putting Rupert in florals and bright colors, but I know this isn’t everyone’s taste!
Seasonal vs. everyday
Would someone buy more than one item from this collection?
Are these different from others currently offered in the Shop?

Final tweaks are made, a few more test prints and then I set them aside for a few days to let myself really think about them prior to making any changes. The next time I look at them if they are still making me happy, they are good to go into production!
